Caracas, Venezuela - a very dangerous destination

Caracas, Venezuela - a very dangerous destination

Caracas, the capital of Venezuela is a cultural and commercial center with a population of 3.3 million people.  Definitively, the city has seen how the political and economic situation of the nation ruled by Nicolás Maduro has affected its stability and has made crime rates to peak.

According to a study from the Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice, based in Mexico City, Caracas is the most violent city in the world. The paper determines this scale by simply making a ration of number of murders per 100,000 inhabitants.  It was conducted with data from 2015 with cities with a population greater than 300,000.

Caracas reported 3,946 homicides in 2015, giving an average of approximately 120 per 100,000 inhabitants.  It is noticeable that it overtook San Pedro Sula, Honduras, which fell to second place due to a “significant decrease” in the number of homicides. San Pedro Sula had been #1 on the list for four consecutive years.

Violent crime in Caracas is pervasive and if tourists plan to visit the city, there are a number of cautionary information that is given.

The city is a reflection of the crisis and soaring levels of inflation that country has suffered since the installment of Hugo Chavez’s revolution.  This has made levels of crime to rise significantly.

It is not recommended to be walking around at night.  People in Caracas seem to have lots of guns.  Usually, a man riding on a motorcycle can be suspicious.  If a tourist spots one and feels they are being followed it is best to run and report to the authorities.

Some tourists have reported not feeling safe even during daylight.  The economic crisis has hit Venezuelans pretty hard and in situations like those, many people see no better option than to turn to crime.  So getting scammed or robbed in Caracas seem to be the everyday thing.
